Applications Now Open: MAFF Japanese Culinary Training & World Sushi Cup Qualifiers 【農水省・日本料理研修&世界すしカップ予選】応募受付スタート!
We are pleased to announce that the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has officially opened applications for two highly valuable programs for chefs working overseas: the “Japanese Culinary Training Program” and the “Japanese Cuisine Competition (Sushi Category) Qualifying Tournament.”
In particular, Oceania countries including Australia are regarded as important export markets for Japanese agricultural and food products, and there are strong expectations for the development and advancement of Japanese cuisine chefs in the region.
We would greatly appreciate it if you could not only consider applying yourself, but also share these opportunities with passionate Japanese cuisine and sushi chefs around you.
1. Invitation-Based Training Program at Japanese Restaurants
This hands-on training program offers participants the opportunity to work directly in leading Japanese restaurants in Japan (including Tokyo), where they can learn advanced culinary techniques as well as the spirit of Japanese hospitality (“omotenashi”).
- Details & Application:
- Application Deadline:Friday, June 30
- Key Point:Applications from major export destination countries (including Australia) are
especially encouraged.(*Selection criteria are applied equally regardless of nationality or country
of origin.)
2. Japanese Cuisine Competition (Sushi Category) Qualifying Tournament
This qualifying competition leads to the WORLD SUSHI CUP®, where the world’s top sushi chefs compete. It is an excellent
opportunity to showcase your skills on the global stage.
- Details & Application:
- Application Deadline:Monday, July 31
- Important Note:Applications will close once capacity is reached. Early entry is strongly recommended.
(*Please note that the qualifying tournament itself is not covered under the

These initiatives play a significant role in promoting authentic Washoku culture throughout the Oceania region.
We warmly encourage all chefs who wish to deepen their understanding of Japanese food culture and challenge themselves on the world stage to apply.
Thank you very much for your continued support.
